Year End Donations
This letter is our annual year end gift request, and here is a story showing why our gifts are so important. It was the first day of Young Teen Camp at Sky Lodge Christian Camp. A young girl excitedly entered the gym, but before she hurried to see her friends, I heard her softly say, “Oh, I love this place, it’s good to be back.”
We can be encouraged that God used Sky Lodge in her life. You see, she was back to a camp that is more than horse rides, canoeing, swimming, cabin fun and great meals. She was back to a camp where we teach that Jesus takes the punishment for our sin, that we need to acknowledge our need for his sacrifice, asking for forgiveness, and believe that God raised Jesus from the dead. Yes, we were happy she was back!
Adjustment is the name of the game in 2020. In mid-May camps were finally allowed to have summer sessions. To handle the COVID protocols, restrictions, and best practices we found that we could only run at about half capacity. We adjusted procedures and had many of our programmed summer sessions.
A second adjustment occurred as our Guest Group (rentals) program suspended their use of camps. Most of these groups have rescheduled for 2021, but it decimated the 2020 operational budget. We “slimmed down” expenses to match lowered revenue by re-negotiating service contracts, insurances, and utilities. We delayed projects and a $10,000 fundraiser for hay was a big boost.
Our third adjustment is with the late fall and winter logistics. To lower basic expenses we winterized (blew water out of pipes, etc.), eliminating the need for heat in many of our buildings. However we can still host groups of up to 50 campers, and if needed, we can reverse the winterizing to host larger groups. We will also offer one day events for youth groups this winter as we plan for Summer 2021!
The result of these adjustments and generous donations are twofold: 1) we have been able to share Jesus in 2020; and, 2) we remained current in our accounts (and did a few improvements). We are heading into the upcoming utility intensive months and help is needed. Will you consider a year end gift to camp this fall?
